Washington, DC- Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee released the following statement commemorating the one-year anniversary of the Virginia Tech University Shootings:
“On Monday, April 16, 2007, at Virginia Tech University, we witnessed a senseless act of violence on a scale unprecedented in our history. That Monday, 32 members of the Virginia Tech family lost their lives. Among them were future scientists, engineers, teachers, doctors, soldiers, fathers, mothers, friends, and leaders. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with the family members of the 32 victims and with all the students at Virginia Tech University. Nevertheless, one year after this horrific tragedy, Virginia Tech University continues to encompass strength, courage and determination.
“The carnage at Virginia Tech also commands us as a nation, to take a stand against senseless acts of violence. Today I call on all Americans throughout this great nation not only to remember the loss of life at Virginia Tech but also to ensure that we as a nation make addressing violence within our schools a top priority.
“As Chair of the Congressional Children’s Caucus, I understand the importance of making sure that our nation’s students are learning in a safe environment. The shootings at Virginia Tech are a stark reminder that we must go to incredible lengths to make sure our children are learning in a safe environment. I recommit myself today to making sure that our nation’s children are safe not matter what classroom, campus, or institution they may attend.”
